LIHUÉ CALEL NATIONAL PARK

Formerly known as “sierras de la vida” (hills of life), this 26.000 ha. natural beauty spreads its splendour within the province through its valleys, streams, springs, flora and fauna.

Lihué Calel preserves this mountain system, as well as its cultural, historical and natural values.

Two remarkable destinations are the hill of the scientific society, the highest spot in the Park, and the “Valle de las Pinturas” (Cave Paints), a sample of late cave art in the region, portraying geometrical figures in red and black dated 2.000 years back.

The “sierras” cause water to accumulate, thus creating a microclimate of which man has made good use since time immemorial.

Another great attraction within the Park is made up by the richness of its flora and fauna. Visitors will dazzle at the varied species of cactus like “traicionera” and appreciate, only there, the singular “margarita amarilla” (yellow daisy) surrounded by “jarillas” and “chañares”. If you prick up your ears, you will be able to recognize the yellow cardinal song or the little grey falcon, protected species both in danger of extinction.

You can practice trekking to cave paints, mountain bike, climbing, photographic safaris, scenic trails, fauna watching, among others. Or you can let energy carries you away and enjoy the sierras de la vida to the full.

It is recommended to contact the Park staff who will welcome and offer you all the necessary information about the management and preservation of this significant environment.

National Parks network sets at your disposal camping sites, being the best seasons Spring and Autumn.
