General Pico was founded in 1905 by Eduardo De Chapeaurouge. The name of the city pays homage to Eduardo Gustavo Pico, a distinguished military man who was Governor of La Pampa during three consequent periods (1892-1899) and commander of the outstanding military forces of La Pampa´s Central territory.
At present, the city keeps up its spirit of sacrifice and progress, rooted in a sound labour history guided by the features of the most fertile land in the province. This remarkable farming profile was accompanied by a gradual development of the metalmechanic industry, which was at its peak in the seventies and left an Industrial Park as a permanent sample of its history.
General Pico, with a population of 52.302 inhabitants (according to the Housing National Census of 2001) is the second most important city in La Pampa and head of Maracó Department. It stands out by its cordiality, order and wide range of services like: gas, electricity, drinking water, high-complexity health services, both in the public as the private sector. The Educational Sector offers primary, terciary and university levels.
The city is communicated with the rest of the country by efficient rail and road systems and an international freight airport.
The celebration of the city´s centenary anniversary comprises varied aspects: Evocation and remembrance of the centenary city´s history and its people; the preservation of architectural heritage and the creation of new sites (Pedestrian Street, Bus Station) for the enhancement of the city´s general welfare and the planning of sociocultural activities (artistic, sports, recreational) for local residents.
Tourist Aspect
The tourist offer is, today, a complementary proposal for those who happen to visit the city with purposes other than tourism. General Pico attracts visitors for multiple reasons: on the one hand, it sets at their disposal a renewed and modern commercial center, five important sports clubs, a comprehensive health service, both for the public and private sectors, various financial entities, the Tribunal-Palace of Justice and technical and vehicular inspection services.
For those spiritually young, the city has found in pubs, discos, popular dances, café concert, bowling, the way to satisfy their needs & interests.
For the little ones, on the other hand, the offer is concentrated in movie theatres, net games and Belgrano Walk/Avenue with entertainment sectors, grills, tables and chairs to enjoy a lovely day with the family.
The most demanding ones have as alternatives: plays and musical concerts at national level, art exhibition hall, with the participation of famous local artists, racetrack, firing ranges, gliding, flying club and a regional museum with more than 1500 pieces which reveal by themselves the history of the city.
Beauty enthusiasts, both men and women, will find a thorough and modern beauty care service, ranging from massage and lymphatic drainage to sauna, spas and many more.
Complementing the offer, the local Tourist Office has provided educational institutions and public in general with varied guided tours.
At present, the city presents tourists with all the facilities for modern life and, only five minutes from downtown, the magic of contemplating dusk in the country.
