Formerly a farming colony, its pioneer settlements, built on the banks of Colorado River, are dated over a hundred years back. The construction of the dam-bridge "Puente Unido" has allowed for the development of an intensive productive activity in the region.
The irrigation area comprises 85.000 ha., supplied with adequate watering systems for both fruit and forest production as well as bovine and goat exploitation.
If you cross the territory southwards, you will see that local scenery breaks the monotony of the Patagonian plain, due to water action and man´s labour.
The river´s productive development also allows for hydroelectric production through the central unit "Los Divisaderos" and the damp "Casa de Piedra".
There is also an important production of natural gas, oil and minerals (bentonite, gypsum, sand, basalt, calcareous and rubble deposits).
